Naming of Sundarbans

The word “Sundarban” is a Bengali word. English translation of this word is beautiful forest. The cause of this name is may be for its popular tree “ Sundori”. It has been declared as 52nd world heritage site in 1997 by UNESCO.

History of the Sundarbans     






  

The area is traced may be 200-300AD. During the Mughal period the Mughal emperor Akbar advanced his armies to defeat some criminals to possess this forest. Later many of building were made there then.  Some smugglers and dacoits live still now. The forest was first mapped  by pirates in 1769. Then next emperor started its systematic management . But British has no idea about mangrove forest. In 1875 large part of the forest has been declared as reserved forest. And acted the forest law. A basic management plan was written in 1893.The world heritage Sundarban  has inscribed in 1987.

How you can reach Sundarban

Dam dam airport is the nearest airport to reach Sundrban in India. From here you can go by cng or train, or other vehicle. But from Bangladesh you have to go Khulna then you have to go porshu river ghat by bus or CNG. Then by a boat you can go other side of river, Sundarban. By waterway in Bangladesh you have to go to Dhaka buriganga river side at puran Dhaka. Daily a ship has taken off from Buriganga to Sundarban. Reaching by sheep you have to hire another boat to reach Sundarban. In India from Namkhana  to Bhagabatpur Crocodile point to Sagar island to Jambudwip to Sundarban.

Geography of Sundarban

 The Sundarban is the largest mangrove forest in the world. It is situated at the bank of river Brahmaputra and Meghna in the south west of Bangladesh ad joining the baay of Bangla . It wides from the Hoogly river to the Baleswar river in Indias estate.  The forest area  is approximately 10000 square km.  Its 60% of the property lies in Bangladesh and rest are in the north India.

Animals of Sundarban 


The forest is famous for the bengal tiger, Indo chinese tiger, Siberian tiger, and such as crocodile and the Indian Python. Moreover spotted deer,  tidal fatal, various kinds of snakes, deers, monkeys, fishes, crocodiles, swamps, mud fatals, Chital deer, Rhesus macaque, Northern river terrapin, white-bellied sea eagle, kingfisher, Lesser adjutant,  Masked finfoot, Brahminy kite, Ilish, Grey Handed fish eagle, Eagle, Ruddy Kingfis, etc, Moreover 250 species birds, as like Heron, Egrets, sand pipers, large and small spoonbills, darters, seagulls, teal ,partridges, various kinds of gees and ducks. In fishes department there are carbs, prawns, guiter fish, whale shark, setipinnna taty, Hilsha fish, setipinna breviceps, mus skipper fish, saw fish, prawns, Hammmer head shark,

Various kinds of insects and bees are living here, and honey sundarban Honey is popular all over the world.

Ecoregion of Sundarban

The forst has the worlds largest ecosystem. It is covered most probably 205002 km.  beside Sundori  other tree species Avicennia, Aegiceras corniculatum, Xylocarpus, mekongensis, Xylocarpus granatum, , Bruguiera, gymnorhiza, Ceriops decandra, Golpata, Rhizophora mucronata and nypa fruticans, Sonneratia apetala, palms. Wet areas are grass forests.

 Cyclone and other natural disaster does some hampers to the forest. The forest provides livelihoods for the millions people of the Bangladesh and India. Lots of touist come to visit here all of the year, The whole year it remains a crowdies place. Total forest on all killing of wild life. Now it is the matter of sorrow that the forest is under threat for some people, these people always kills the animals of livelihood. The ground of the forest is elevated  as a result of soil deposition.
