Naming of Sundarbans The word “Sundarban” is a Bengali word. English translation of this word is beautiful forest. The cause of this name is may be for its popular tree “ Sundori”. It has been declared as 52nd world heritage site in 1997 by UNESCO. History of the Sundarbans The area is traced may be 200-300AD. During the Mughal period the Mughal emperor Akbar advanced his armies to defeat some criminals to possess this forest. Later many of building were made there then. Some smugglers and dacoits live still now. The forest was first mapped by pirates in 1769. Then next emperor started its systematic management . But British has no idea about mangrove forest.
